Set Your Face like Flint
The world we are living in is full of fear and anxiety. Everywhere we look, there seems to be confusion. So how do we navigate these troubled times?
I remember my mom used to say, “Set your face like flint.” But what does that actually mean?
In Isaiah 50:7 it says, “For the Lord God helps me, therefore, I am not disgraced; therefore, I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.”
As children of God, we can be assured that God is always there to help us. The word “therefore” means “for that reason.” Flint is a very hard, dark gray quartz.
I guess we could read this verse like this: “Because God is helping me, and for that reason, I am determined, and I will not be ashamed.”
We just had the opportunity to watch the Olympics this past summer. There were some pretty determined athletes who competed for the gold. I’m pretty sure they had “set their faces like flint” in order to compete and win. Winning takes a lot of determination.
So, can we do any less? Let’s run to win the race! Let’s “set our faces like flint!”
