The Cloak of Zeal

When we think about the armor of God, we are usually thinking of Ephesians 6 where we are encouraged to put on the whole armor of God: the helmet, breastplate, belt, shoes, shield, and sword.

In Isaiah 59:17 it talks about the breastplate of righteousness and the helmet of salvation, but it also mentions one more thing – being clad with a cloak of zeal.

Zeal is an exciting word. It means eagerness or enthusiasm. A cloak is an outer garment. What if every day when we wake up, we spiritually put on the whole armor of God?

We place the helmet of salvation on our heads. We put the belt of truth around our waist. We are covered with the breastplate of righteousness. We have the sword of the Spirit (the Word of God) in one hand and the shield of faith in the other. We have the shoes of peace on our feet. And then, over it all, we put on the cloak of zeal.

Most of the armor is for our protection, but the sword of the Spirit is something we can use to fight the enemy – and then if we put the cloak of zeal over it all, what happens? We aren’t just ready to stand our ground. We are ready to get in the battle and fight!

I think it’s time we get aggressive and realize who we are in Christ and the authority we have in Jesus’ name! So, in the morning when you wake up, grab that cloak of zeal and let’s do it! Let’s take back what the enemy has tried to steal from us!
